ADAA's mission is to promote the prevention, treatment, and cure of anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders through education, practice, and research. ADAA is the leader in education, training, and research for anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders, with 1,100 professional members. Anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric illnesses affecting children and adults. An estimated 40 million American adults suffer from anxiety disorders, and one in eight children. Research shows that untreated children with anxiety disorders are at higher risk to perform poorly in school, miss out on important social experiences, and engage in substance abuse. Nearly one-half of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and vice versa. Many also have a co-occurring disorder or physical illness, such as an eating disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which can make their symptoms worse and recovery more difficult.
