Club Passim has become a legendary music club that is a local landmark, a national treasure and a living cultural institution. The Club Mount Auburn 47 opened as a coffeehouse in 1958. Joan Baez started her career at the club. Many of today's singer/songwriters performed in the 70s and 80s.In 1994, Club Passim became a nonprofit, seeking to link folk culture to the community. Culture for Kids, Club Passim School of Music, and the Archive Project are the three main programs. There are also 400 performances a year of song, music, storytelling and poetry.
