We serve Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) rooted in rural, low-income communities in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. This is the ?missing middle? of emerging market economies, the entrepreneurial businesses that are too small for local banks and too big for microcredit. Employing billions of people who earn only a few dollars a day, these SMEs are critical to creating jobs, increasing assets, and conserving natural resources. Our aim is to forge a path that mainstream financial institutions can follow, and where our socially motivated investors can efficiently reach enterprises with high social and environmental impact. Ultimately, we seek to demonstrate that the traditional view of rural producers as ?unbankable? is inaccurate, and inspire mainstream banks to sharply increase the capital available to SMEs in the developing world.
