Working in the Schools (WITS) is a 501(c)3 organization that promotes literacy and the love of reading among Chicago’s youth by providing one-on-one tutoring and mentoring programs. Working exclusively in Chicago Public Schools, WITS strives to reach at-risk elementary students during the most academically impressionable years of youth. WITS engages corporate, government, and community members to volunteer in the schools during the work day. Paired with the same student for an entire school year, volunteers help with reading, writing, comprehension and vocabulary while becoming steady mentors in their students’ lives. WITS programs continue to yield outstanding results with yearly evaluation to support our findings. WITS students outperform their nonparticipating peers in reading comprehension, vocabulary, but most importantly, attitudes toward reading.
