mothers2mothers is an NGO that works to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Our mission is to help eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV through an effective, sustainable model of care that relies on trained local women who provide education and support for pregnant women and new mothers living with HIV. We train and employ new mothers living with HIV to provide education, counseling and support to women just like themselves. These “Mentor Mothers” become professional members of health delivery teams where they work alongside doctors and nurses to serve the needs of HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers and to help fill the gaps in critically understaffed health systems. The mothers employed by mothers2mothers come from the communities in which they work. They help provide a solution to the lack of health care providers in Africa. They help combat stigma and empower and guide other women, making them aware of treatments and services that are available, saving lives. The mothers2mothers program is in seven countries, at over 400 sites, employing nearly 1,000 HIV-positive women. mothers2mothers enrolled about 300,000 unique HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers last year. That is 20 percent of the world’s population of HIV-positive pregnant women.
