Description: Red Cross staff and volunteers prepare for and repond to local (Greater NY) disasters (including everyday fires, floods etc.) and facilitate health and safety training by and for volunteers.
Mission: The mission of the American Red Cross in Greater New York is to help people avoid, prepare for, and cope with emergencies; to enhance self-reliance and concern for others; and to improve the quality of human life. It does this through services that are led by volunteers and guided by its congressional charter and the principles of the International Red Cross Movement. The American Red Cross in Greater New York was formed in 1959, uniting Red Cross units in the five boroughs into a single citywide organization, while at the same time recognizing their local status. Later, chapters in Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Sullivan counties joined ARC/GNY. Its headquarters building at 150 Amsterdam Avenue was dedicated in 1963.
