The Molly Bear Foundation, named in loving memory of Molly Elizabeth Brown, who was known by friends and family as Molly Bear, provides supplemental financial support to families raising children with Trisomy 18. Trisomy 18, sometimes called Edwards Syndrome, is a genetic condition caused by a chromosomal defect where there are three occurences of the 18th chromosome, rather than the normal two. It occurs in about one in every 3000 live births. Each case is different, and there are varying degrees of developmental issues and medical complications associated with Trisomy 18, but many of these issues are potentially life-threatening in the early stages of development. While many children born with Trisomy 18 will not survive these early challenges, more and more babies are beating the odds, living longer lives, and bringing joy to their families. Molly died in March of 2008 at 19 months of age.
