Casting For Recovery was founded in 1996. The vision was to use the physical and spiritual elements of fly fishing to support women with breast cancer. It was felt that learning a sport for life, such as fly fishing, would renew hope and provide an opportunity to consider the meaning of learning a new skill as a commitment to their future. Furthermore, the casting motion of fly fishing mimics the exercises often prescribed by physicians to help restore mobility in areas that may have been compromised by surgery.
