The Wonder of Reading's mission is to have a significant impact on reading in Southern California. Implementing the 3R Program (Renovate, Restock, and Read), we expand and renovate school libraries, restock them with new books, and train volunteers to work one-on-one with struggling readers for an hour every week, or every other week, throughout the school year. As part of a comprehensive package designed to enhance literacy initiatives on an ongoing basis at the school, we also offer family reading trainings and library skills workshops. By the end of 2008, we will have renovated 203 public elementary school libraries, worked with school Literacy Leadership Teams to provide more than $2,100,000 worth of new library books, and trained nearly 5,500 volunteers to read one-on-one with students in our schools. Approximately 340,000 children will have been reached by the program, with an added positive impact on teachers, parents, and future generations.
