MILLION DOLLAR RIDE

People living in underdeveloped regions of the world suffer due to lack of access to simple, sustainable transportation. Imagine sending your child to walk more than 5 miles each way to get to school, being very ill and having no choice but to walk to get urgently needed medical care or carrying 50 pounds of vegetables to the market as your only means of income.

This inaugural, Million Dollar Ride, took place this past November in Zambia and Cape Town, South Africa. Cycling legend Johan Bruyneel and F.K. Day, World Bicycle Relief President and SRAM Corporation Executive Vice President, led a small group of influential and committed individuals to help make a significant breakthrough on awareness of and solutions to the problems of mobility in rural Africa.

EMPOWERMENT, RESPECT & EQUALITY

"Addressing Gender Violence and Sexual Abuse in Zambia"

Gender-based violence is one of the most common forms of aggression, particularly in developing countries. In Zambia, the government has identified it as the most significant threat affecting women and girl children. Gender-based violence includes physical violence, emotional violence, sexual violence, and economic violence. It leads to depression, low self-esteem, social isolation, physical injury, and sexual disease, particularly HIV/AIDS.

World Vision, through the Reaching HIV/AIDS Affected People with Integrated Development and Support (RAPIDS) in partnership with the A Safer Zambia (ASAZA) public grant initiative and the Empowerment, Respect and Equality (ERE) private grant project is implementing a national strategy for addressing gender violence and sexual abuse in Zambia for 45,000 women and girls at risk.
