Ernie was rescued when he was in line to be turned in to the county shelter. Neighbors had found him and his brother Burt abandoned at the house next door, and had been feeding and giving them water for the past week. They were living outside in this awful heat with no one to take care of them. We saw that Ernie had a limp on his hind leg and knew he would not make it out of there if he were turned into a high kill shelter. We were in the lobby at the same time, waiting to rescue another dog in the shelter, and although we had no place to put them (we are so full!) we took them anyway, on faith that we would find foster homes. After seeing their sweet faces, we could not leave them there!! With some networking (ok, begging!), we did find a foster home for both Burt and Ernie and they're much happier now!
Ernie went to our vets and had x-rays that showed an old fracture to the femur on his hind leg. The vet thought it was several months old and had not healed up properly, and recommended we do a procedure called a femoral head osteectomy. We would really like to give Ernie the surgery he needs which will give him 90% or greater use of the hind leg again, so he will be able to get around and run and play like a normal dog.
Ernie is only about a year old at most, and he's an adorable mix of what looks to be Sharpei and Boston Terrier. Ernie (and his brother Burt) has the sweetest disposition and is so happy and grateful to be in a loving foster home where he has a comfy bed and lots of love and attention. He loves other dogs and he's doing just great. He looks forward to the day when he can use his hind leg better and be able to play with his foster brothers and sisters.
Please consider donating to sweet Ernie's surgery fund! He is a special dog and deserves a second chance at a happy home where he'll be cherished and well cared for finally...
