Dear Family and Friends,
Greetings from Holy Innocent's Children's Hospital (HICH), Uganda. What an incredible year 2011 has been! Despite the global economic downturn, Holy Innocents continues not only to survive but thrive in these challenging times thanks to the generous contributions and volunteer efforts from our friends and supporters.
Accomplishments in 2011:
• 40,000 children treated at Holy Innocents in the two years since the hospital opened.
• Mortality rate for 2010-2011 down to 4%
• Official recognition by the Ugandan Ministry of Health and the Catholic Medical Bureau which allows us access to needed funding.
• Provision of high quality pediatric care and community outreach
• Provision of pediatric training for local health care practitioners
• Hosting of volunteers from world class US and European medical institutions and universities
• Increase support from donors and non-profit organizations including Lloyds of London, AmeriCares, The Friends of Children, Sabin Foundation, Rotary International, Sonosite, Delta and Alaska Airlines and Welch Allyn all of whom helped to make our work possible.
While we are delighted with what has been
accomplished thus far we know there is much to
be done.
Goals for 2012:
• Increase hospital capacity to provide basic hospital and clinic services.....$10/child day
• Obtain oxygen production unit.....$23K
• Secure needed medications.....$5-$10/child per day
• Increase available water supply...$40K
• Provide adequate and reliable electrical power.....$75K
• Advance neonatal care with provision of improved respiratory equipment......$6K
• Expand laboratory and radiology services...$30K
• Establish electronic medical record system...$5K
• Improve wireless capability to allow for collaboration with sister hospitals.....$12K
As Holy Innocents Children's Hospital Ambassador-Father Bonaventure, says time and time again,
"How can we say that we are well if there is a child suffering somewhere in the world?"
