Since our founding in 1824, MEEI has been guided by a mission “that the deaf may hear and the blind may see.” Our vision is to be the preeminent world-wide source of advances and leaders in preserving and restoring vision, hearing, balance and voice as well as in curing disorders of the head and neck
MEEI is a non-profit specialty teaching hospital that is dedicated to excellence in the care of disorders that affect the eye, ear, nose, throat, and head and neck. Patients come to MEEI for specialized care from Boston, New England, all throughout the United States, and from 99 countries around the world.
MEEI is a pioneer of research to preserve and restore vision from blinding diseases including macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and others. Extensive research is underway to improve diagnosis and treatment for hearing loss, balance problems and head and neck cancer.
MEEI is the primary teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School in ophthalmology and otolaryngology. Each year, approximately 100 residents and fellows participate in one of the most sought-after medical training programs in the country.

Our personal message:
April 1, 2008.....................................................................................................Thank you to everyone who has supported our MEEI Vision Rehab fundraising for the Marathon!....... Not long now until April 21. .......................................................................Hello! I am glad that you are reading this. Yesterday I ran 14 miles through Wellesley asking myself, why am I doing this?? I am doing this because training for a marathon is great exercise and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary is a great place to support. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I joined the MEEI as Director of Vision Rehabilitation in September, 2006. In that Clinic we have a fabulous staff of seven, dedicated people who are our 'MEEI Team'. We see patients who have, for whatever cause, diminished vision that impacts their day-to-day function. The task of our team is to assist those patients to train to use their remaining sight, with devices, with techniques or with alternate strategies, so that they are able to do the things they need to do, and want to do. For example, our patients learn to listen to the newspaper by dialing a service called Newsline on their cellphone. They read their recipes under a video camera magnifier and our occupational therapists assist them to make modifications in their homes to enhance safety and independence. . . . Your donation to sponsor my run on April 21st will support this work in our Clinic. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Thanks in advance for your support of the MEEI and our Vision Rehab service. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mary Lou . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . PS. Check out Nicole Brown's website www.firstgiving.com/nicolebrown. Nicole is an occupational therapist in our clinic who is also running on April 21st. Go Nicole!
