"Unshaken by Parkinson's Disease"
Unshaken is a term best used to describe Partnerships for Parkinson's founder, Mike Justak. A Early Onset Parkinson's patient himself, he decided one year after his being diagnosed, to not just sit around and wait but to engage himself in overcoming the disease.
Parkinson's is a progressive neurologcal movement disorder for which there is no cure. It occurs when a brain chemical, Dopamine, is not available in sufficient quantities. Dopamine works like oil in an engine, providing for smooth transition of electrical impulses from the brain to the muscles. Symptoms can include; tremor, rigidity, loss of balance and trouble with speech. Notable figures with Parkinson's iinclude Michael J. Fox, NBA star Brian Grant, Muhammad Ali, Janet Reno amd Pope John Paul II.
Funds generated by PFP are used to fufill the PFP mission of providing education, promoting research, and improving the lives of patients and caregivers.
Funds raised in 2010 have been used to generate awareness through the PD Shimmers Christmas Light Show. PFP has promoted exercise therapy by providing patients with books and DVD's that illustrate how to "Delay the Disease." The websites and blog provide useful information on the disease. The PFP blog was named a "Top Blog" for Parkinson's disease in 2010.
