About Spina Bifida
The most common permanently disabling birth defect in the U.S., Spina Bifida occurs in 7/10,000 pregnancies. The condition is characterized by the failure of the spinal cord to close properly very early in pregnancy, which results in varying degrees of paralysis, bowel and bladder difficulties, and learning disorders.
New advances in surgery, along with the work of teams of doctors, therapists, teachers, and parents, are allowing those with Spina Bifida to live full and productive lives.
