Since 2006, United Way has helped hundreds of young adults and student volunteers from across the United States spend their winter break making meaningful impacts in communities across the country. In January 2012, over 200 students from across the country will travel to New Jersey to participate in United Way's Alternative Winter Break (AWB) 2012.

As a United Way AWB volunteer you will work in a variety of educational settings helping to close the achievement gap for children of limited means in communities across Newark, NJ.  In these settings, you will work directly with kids, assisting in the implementation of an enriching, fun and engaging after school program.  In addition, you will also get the opportunity to increase the capacity of these agencies by providing much needed physical improvements to their facilities

There is a $25 non-refundable registration fee to hold your spot in our Alternative Winter Break program. In addition, you will be required to secure $250 in donations** which covers the following:

• Transportation to and from the airport, train or bus station
• All on-the-ground transportation throughout the service week
• Lodging (At the Boys & Girls Club of Newark)
• Food
• Meaningful service projects
• A week of fun and service with other passionate and civic minded young leaders
