Walk On A Nature Trail Or Enjoy A Competitive Certified 5K Run
In 15 YEARS, Sunshine walkers, runners and rollers will have traveled more than 12,450 miles. That’s what it means to go the distance!
On September 8, 2012, Sunshine will be hosting our 15th annual Walk, 5K Run & Roll. We welcome the Toledo community (and anyone else who would like to join!) to come enjoy a beautiful nature walk or competitive, certified 5K run to raise funds for people with developmental disabilities served at Sunshine.
This event will be held at Monclova Elementary School at 8035 Monclova Road outside of Toledo, Ohio.
The event schedule is as follows:
7:00 a.m. Registration

9:30 a.m. 5K Walk & Roll
History Of The Walk, 5K Run & Roll
The original Walk with Sunshine was inspired by Jeff Alt’s 2,160 mile trek along the Appalachian Trail in 1998 in honor of his brother, Aaron, a resident at Sunshine. The Sunshine community, inspired by Jeff’s efforts, organized a walk that same year that raised $16,000, establishing the fundraiser as an annual event. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $220,000 for the people that Sunshine serves.
About Registering For The Walk and/or 5K Run
Would you like to join us? You must register by August 24, 2012 if you’d like to receive a commemorative t-shirt. Entry fees are as follows:
- 13 and older pre-registration fee: $15
- 12 and under pre-registration fee: $10
- Day of registration fee: $20
After critical cuts in our funding, we are trying to Bridge the Gap for people with developmental disabilities. We are suffering a shortfall of $12 per person per day for our services. We are hoping that we can cover this gap with events like the Walk, 5K Run & Roll. Help us bridge the gap by obtaining pledges for your nature walk or competitive 5K run. Participants are encouraged to obtain a minimum of $65 in pledges, including the $15 registration fee. All pledges must be turned in on the day of the Walk, 5K Run & Roll and checks should be made to Sunshine Foundation, Inc.
Prizes For Our Competitive, Certified 5K Run
Overall and Master Male and Female in the 5K run will receive a TBD cash prize and a commemorative medal made by the artists at Sunshine’s Vocational Center. Awards to top three in each age group. Our age groups for the 5K run are as follows: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65 and over. There will be no duplication of awards. Other prizes will be awarded to individuals that raise the most funds for Sunshine. Teams are encouraged! Gather your friends, family, co-workers or anyone else to do the 5K run or the non-competitive walk as part of your team. Sunshine would like to thank the Toledo Roadrunners for their support of our certified 5K run since its inception two years ago.
What Else Does The Walk, 5K Run & Roll Offer?
The children’s activity area includes craft projects, music and more. Leashed pets are welcome. No bikes or roller blades are permitted. All proceeds from the Walk, 5K Run & Roll are used to help fund programs and services for the people served at Sunshine.
