Abada/Axé Capoeira is a non-profit group whose main objective is to promote Capoeira and Brazilian culture. It's part of our philosophy to visually and physically present our culture and unique tradition to all social groups and classes, and by doing so, we hope to keep our roots alive and flourishing.
Once a year, as is tradition of many Capoeira organizations, our group holds an important event called the Batizado. The Batizado is a day of celebration, promotion, and achievement. The beginner students are properly welcomed into the organization and presented to the masters and guest instructors of the organization. The students are then inducted and receive their corda (rank). Additionally, the more advanced students are promoted to the next level of achievement, and will receive their next corda. This sequence marks a significant stepping stone in a studying Capoeirista’s education.
As this is a ceremonious occasion, friends, family, and members of other Capoeira organizations are also invited to attend. With lively music, enthusiastic audience participation, clapping, singing, senior students “playing” in the roda, or circle, of capoeira, and performances from visitors, there is a lot of energy in the air.
To put on a major event like this requires a lot of dedication, pride, and time. And similar to many for-profit productions, there are numerous costs associated with the organization, planning and logistics of this ceremony. As we are non-profit organization, we actively try to participate in fund-raisers and engage in other activities to raise money to support our group. Unfortunately, the costs for this once a year ceremony sometimes exceed our organizations efforts, means, and funds. With the above said, any contribution would be truly appreciated and would be used for a truly great cause.
