"Sponsor a Girl, Change the World"
This year, we celebrate our 4th year of the Girl/Friends Leadership Institute, an art-based program for teenage girls who are committed to being leaders in the movement to end violence against women and girls.
Please help us achieve our fundraising goal of $20,000 by June 30 by sponsoring a girl today! Each teen girl in the program receives a $800 stipend for the all year around programming. Donate now and 100% of your gift goes directly to fund a girl in the program.
Our Story: The Path to Healing
A Long Walk Home, Inc. is a survivor-led organization that uses art therapy and the visual and performing arts to end violence against girls and women. Founded in 2003 in response to co-founder Salamishah Tillet’s experiences of sexual assault, the organization has created programs for underserved communities that address the need to heal from and prevent sexual assault and dating violence. ALWH partners with universities, high schools, and state coalitions to provide innovative and inclusive programs for underserved communities.
Through its award winning SOARS college arts program and the Girl/Friends Leadership Institute, ALWH has educated over 100,000 survivors and their allies to build safe communities. Over the last year, donors like you have helped us triple the number of Girl/Friends teen leaders in the movement to end violence against girls and women.
Changing the face of the movement: Girl/Friends
“It was an unbelievable learning experience, the skills it takes to become an advocate against violence against women and learning them made me feel more powerful than I’ve ever had before.” ~ Girl/Friends youth leader, age 17.
In 2009, Girl/Friends Leadership Institute was formed in the North Lawndale community, situated in the west side of Chicago, which often becomes invisible in the social services landscape of the city. With both domestic and sexual violent crimes being the highest in the state, there are no domestic violence shelters in the entire west side of Chicago and the only rape crisis center for this neighborhood closed down in April 2011. A Long Walk Home is the only organization that serves as an educational, preventative and advocacy resource against dating and sexual violence in this community.
As a result of the high need in this community, Girl/Friends Leadership Institute is a year-long program that empowers adolescent girls to utilize the arts as tools for social change and healing, creates strong sexual and dating violence policies and prevention campaigns at their school, and community.
