Thompson Island Outward Bound programs meet the needs of Boston's youth - many of whom come from communities that are plagued by violence, gangs, drugs, and low expectations. Our programs are unique because they engage students in challenging and unfamiliar physical experiences to teach perseverance, initiative, self-direction, courage, responsibility, collaboration, curiosity, and critical thinking. Teaching these skills and cultivating these traits in young people and adults will ultimately lead to a transformed society where social and environmental responsibility and compassion are valued and embodied in our schools, companies, and communities.
Dear Friends & Family, On April 16th, I am running the Boston Marathon for a great cause, the non-profit organization of Thompson Island Outward Bound. As a father of three children I am just beginning to understand all that it takes to raise good, confident and compassionate children. I thought this would be a great way to tie together training for a marathon and helping a charity that helps the needs of Boston's youth. Thompson Island Outward Bound provides the opportunity for 5,000 young people each year to participate in Outward Bound expeditions and achieve beyond what they ever dreamed possible. Please join me in supporting Thompson Island Outward Bound and help Boston ’s youth achieve their goals. For those who would prefer to contribute by check; all checks should be made out to Thompson Island Outward Bound. Please put “Andrew Biancheri” on the Memo line and mail it to;Thompson Island Outward Bound Attn: Sarah Swanson PO Box 127Boston, MA 02127 Thank you so much, I truly appreciate all of your support. I always used to take the easy route but now I can do anything I want to if I push myself. When I get home and things get tough and I feel like giving up, even if I have hard times, I can look at my Outward Bound course and say ‘I Can!’” Jamir, 10th grader TIOB student “I learned that I can do everything I put my mind to. Difficult takes a day. Impossible takes a week. If I fell I knew everyone had my back. In Boston I will know I am not alone and that there are people supporting me to get where I need to go.” ─Jonathan, 10th grader Boston Community Academy “I learned compassion. That means helping other people when they need help. I will take this back to Boston by helping my peers when they get stuck.” ─ Techane, 9th grade Mildred Avenue Middle School To learn more you can visit their website; http://www.thompsonisland.org/
