MEET DELILAH
She's had a tough life. Held at the Baldwin Shelter as evidence to a cruelty case, adopted out only to be abandoned in an empty condo after her owner moved. When she was rescued by Forte Animal Rescue she was 20 pounds over weight could barely walk due to her legs not being used to holding up all that extra weight and to top it off she had become blind due to degenerated retina's in both eyes. She was labeled dog and cat aggressive and we were told she didn't like men. This made it extremely difficult to find her a loving forever home.
Delilah spent another 6 months in a boarding facility where she became very stressed and began to drool excessively. She needed human companionship and a comfy home to call her own.
Delilah is finally in a foster home, has lost weight ,loves to play with her doggie sisters, and adores her foster dad! She's still timid around strange men but doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body even when she's scared.
She's finally living the life she deserves at her fosters but her past life has come back to haunt her! Delilah was recently diagnosed with having TWO Mast Cell Tumors that will need to be removed, biopsied and she will need to undergo some chemotherapy treatments. Estimated at $3,500.00 for the surgery alone. We pray that the biopsy will not show any cancer but we will not know for sure until after her surgery.
Forte Animal Rescue survives solely on the generosity of the public. In Delilah's hour of need we are reaching out to the community for help.
Please help Forte Animal Rescue, an all volunteer nonprofit 501(c)(3), by donating to help us save Delilah's life. Your support is tax deductable and will mean we can give Delilah the best chance to live the rest of her life comfortably and happily.
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. Delilah and Forte Animal Rescue thanks you very much for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too! www.farescue.org
DELILAH UPDATE: 4/1/08
First of all I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU from Delilah and all of us at Forte Animal Rescue.
Because of all those that donated, we were able to raise enough money to put down a deposit and Delilah was able to get her surgery!!
We will continue to raise the remaining balance but at least the tumors have been removed and we will wait for the Biopsy results to see if the cancer has spread or not and what will be the next step!
The surgery went well. Although, she looks like she was attacked by a shark (her incisions are huge) and she didn't want to eat for the first day or so but she is back to her "eat everything in sight" self and of course everyone she met at the hospital fell in love with her. She was a perfect patient.
She's back at her foster home and even playing with her little foster sister (shown in the picture with her) The little one is so gentle with Delilah now that she has had her surgery. It's amazing how the other dogs know they need to be gentle with her right now.
I can not thank you all enough!! I will continue to update this page and let you all know the biopsy results!
Thanks again!! Delilah and Forte Animal Rescue
UPDATE 5/21/08 - COME MEET DELILAH AT MAGGIANO'S MONDAY JUNE 2
Delilah is doing well and back to her normal self!
As we all waited for the biopsy results we prepared ourselves for what the results would mean:
Grade 1 - minimal to no malignant activity (in most cases just surgery is needed)
Grade 2 - some malignant activity, moderately differentiated, prognosis and treatment options are most complicated and difficult to predict
Grade 3 - poorly differentiated, very aggressive and most likely to rapidly metastasize.
The biopsy results came in......................
Her Tumors were a Grade 2. We wanted a Grade 1 but were glad to hear it was not a Grade 3!
We then took her to a highly recommended Oncologist in Ventura to find out what we needed to do. Chemo? Radiation? Were we going to hear more bad news?
After looking at her results from the surgery and looking at Delilah he told us that Delilah has a very low Grade 2. Yes there was malignant activity in the tumor but the surrounding tissue showed no malignant activity. Right now she is in the clear!!
BUT (there is always a but)....... she has a 60% chance of getting more tumors. We have to keep a very close eye on her for any lumps and bumps and will need to get them checked out right away. With each Tumor that may show up we will need to make a conscience decision to have her go through another surgery or not.. He went on to say that chemo and radiation at this point is not necessary and will not help her in anyway from not getting another tumor.
For now...Delilah is a happy healthy dog! She acts like a young pup especially if you have a treat in your hand! You would actually never guess her age or that she just had cancerous tumors removed!
We are still working on paying off the surgery and thinking about getting a job for her to put some money aside incase we need to get another Tumor removed in the future. hehe!
