  This October will mark The Arc of Volusia's 6th Annual Buddy Walk. Held in conjunction with the National Down Syndrome Society’s (NDSS) Buddy Walk, the primary purpose of the event is to raise public awareness of developmental disabilities and the services we provide.

  During the month of October, National Down Syndrome Awareness Month and National Physical Therapy Month, more than 300,000 individuals across America will be participating in Buddy Walks. Families, schools, support groups and organizations will be walking on behalf of persons with Down syndrome. This year, NDSS has a new partnership with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). The Arc of Volusia will be donating 25% of our proceeds to NDSS.

  The Arc Buddy Walk will be held October 25, 2008, which is also Make A Difference Day, sponsored by the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties. The event will take place at DeLand’s Earl Brown Park. Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m., and the one-mile walk will start at 10:00 a.m. A local APTA representative will be providing resources to the walk participants and will be leading stretching exercises before the walk.

  The morning will be filled with music, entertainment, door prizes, and hot dogs and drinks. A $15.00 donation includes lunch, a beverage and a Buddy Walk t-shirt.

  Giggles the Clown and Cubbie, from the Daytona Cubs baseball team, will be our Walk mascots.

  In addition to walkers, event sponsors are needed. Monetary sponsorships and donations of food and drink, door prizes, and entertainment are needed to make our Buddy Walk a successful event. Please contact Eileen Taft at (386) 274-4736 ext. 317 to discuss sponsor and donor opportunities.
