My personal message:

Hi everyone!

We need your help!!

This year, the Johns Hopkins University SALUD initiative, together with the Peruvian American Medical Society, is working to help a region of Ayacucho, a community in the rural highlands of Peru.  The area was hit hard by the Shining Path terrorist group and the ensuing violence in the 1980’s.  The department of Ayacucho and the vicinities suffered 69,000 casualties and an estimated 200,000 people were driven from their homes.  The violence and instability left the region unable to meet its basic needs.  These include lack of access to clean water, daycare, education, and healthcare.  Since the violence stopped in 1990, the people of Ayacucho, with international help, have begun to reconstruct their communities.

OUR WORK:
We are working to help a local health post in Ayacucho meet the basic health needs of the population.  This community, Santa Elena, is home to approximately 9,000 people.  There is only one health post to serve the needs of this population, and the center tries very hard to provide the best services possible;  however, the health post has very limited resources and the nearest hospital is far away.  Patients, especially those with emergency cases, do not have easy access to services.  These cases are often pregnant mothers and babies with birth complications.  Through your generosity, we were donated an EKG machine, which we delivered to the health post in July.  This time, we are aiming to provide the health post with an ambulance.  This is where we need your help.  Any donations on your part are greatly appreciated and will help save lives.  If you choose to lend your support for this cause, you will be pleased to know that all donations are 100% tax deductible.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at narges@jhu.edu or neena.qasba@gmail.com.

Many thanks for your support--and don't forget to forward this to anyone you know who may be able to help us.  You will help the lives of thousands!

Thank you!
