Barong Tagalog (Ba-rong Ta-ga-log)
The Barong Tagalog is an embroidered upper garment which is known for being the Philippine national attire for men. Properly referred to as baro na Tagalog (in English: “Tagalog dress”), this costume has a rich cultural tradition of more than four centuries, evolving to redefine its appearance and purpose.
Hello,
My name is Stacy Cabales and I am a senior undergraduate student at California State University, East Bay, majoring in Kinesiology with an option in Pre-Physical Therapy. Currently, I am involved in a three-month leadership program that requires each participant to organize an event that will benefit his or her community. I chose an event that features selected Filipino families within the Vallejo community. The purpose is to acknowledge and honor our beloved fathers and/or their father figures.
My late grandfather Severo Magtoto inspired me to create this event. My grandfather was not only a World War II veteran, but also a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
My grandfather died from a stroke on December 31st, 1999. Being one of 13 grandchildren, I was probably the closest to my grandfather. However, when I was young, I often did not appreciate my grandfather. I, more often than not, took my grandfather’s love and generosity for granted. My grandfather's unforeseen death left me powerless because I had never allowed myself to verbally acknowledge him for all that he did for me and to tell him how much I truly love him. This year marks the 10th year since his death, and since then, I have prayed and thanked him for his love and for helping me become the woman I am today.

The milestone of the event will be an exhibition of displays created by Filipino Families in the Vallejo Community. The event will also include stations for sponsors and vendors. The evening will conclude with performances by local Filipino performers. As for the desired outcome of this event, I would like to foster a sense of unity and compassion within the families and overall community.
Proceeds will go directly to the Bayanihan Clinic located in Sacramento, CA. This Clinic is a UC Davis student based clinic that provides culturally and linguistically sensitive primary care to the underserved Filipino population, particularly Filipino World War II Veterans who were stripped of their benefits by FDR. Since more of them, sadly, are dying, they have expanded their mission to include recent immigrants and the general uninsured population. For more information, please visit Bayanihanclinic.org.
I, Stacy Cabales, am committed to ensuring that our sponsors receive recognition for their sponsorship and participation in the event and in the community. For its support of Barongs of Our Fathers, sponsors will be recognized as follows:
· Name recognition on Barongs of Our Fathers event program
· Name and logo on Barongs of Our Fathers signage at the event
· Live mention by Master of Ceremonies
Please donate to help make this event a great success, so that our community can thrive and our elders can feel the honor they deserve. Thank you for your future considerations and donations.
