The Legend of the Silver Paddle

"In 1955 in the icy boundary waters of Canada a Scout Troop was camping off a remote Island only reachable by Canoe.  While fishing for their food one of the Scouts fell in the water and had to be rescued.  Despite the troops’ best efforts the boy suffered from severe hypothermia and needed immediate medical attention.  Two brave Scout leaders volunteered to canoe the boy the 48 miles to the nearest ranger station though no one gave them much of a chance to make it in time.  The two men were said to have made the trip in under an hour and had no explanation for this miraculous feat.  The Scout recovered and the canoe paddle they used was coated in Silver to commemorate the feat and stands as a trophy today to those who are willing to race to support a Scout"

The Silver Paddle Canoe Race is a special event fundraiser to help support the Scouts of the Simon Kenton Council.  A percentage of the funds are used to buy aquatics equipment and the remainder supports the Simon Kenton Council Community Friends of Scouting Campaign.  It is a grass roots effort to ask the community and passionate Scouts and Scouting volunteers to obtain pledges and sponsors in order to compete.  In addition the event is aimed at increasing awareness of the Scouting program in Central Ohio to encourage more adults to volunteer and donate, and more youth to join a local program.

About the Delaware District

The Delaware District of the Simon Kenton Council, Boy Scouts of America, serves the youth of Delaware County, Ohio. The 459 square-mile District is home to 23 Cub Scout Packs, 16 Boy Scout Troops, 5 Venture Crews,and 4 Sea Scout Ships.

The District was born when the Mingo District, which covered both Union and Delaware Counties, was divided along county lines.

All adult leaders in the District are encouraged to attend the monthly District Roundtable, a great place to get and share information about activities and opportunities in the District. Roundtable for all Scouters is held at 7:00 PM on the first Thursday of each month throughout the school year at the Alum Creek Church, 6256 S. Old State Rd. in Lewis Center, Ohio.

The District Committee meets at 7:00 PM on the fourth Thursday of each month (except for November and December when it meets the third Thursday) at the Alum Creek Church in Lewis Center, Ohio.

The District is represented in Tecumseh Lodge 65, Order of the Arrow, (OA) by the Mkw'alaakwa Chapter. OA is service organization of honor campers. The Mkw'alaakwa Chapter meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Ostrander United Methodist Church, 166 W. North Ostrander Rd. in Ostrander, Ohio.

In the heart of the Delaware District at 4422 Columbus Pike, Camp Lazarus serves the entire Simon Kenton Council. The Camp was visited by the founder of the Scouting Movement, Lord Robert Baden-Powell.

To find out more about the Delaware District, please contact Ryan Bertram, District Executive, at 614-436-7200 x267 or rbertram@skcbsa.org.
