A message from our executive producer, Scott Harris:
When does the corporate media use the word "socialism"?
"With the extreme right organizing a frontal attack against the very modest, and often inadequate attempts of President Obama to move U.S. foreign and domestic policy in a different direction from the disastrous path of the Bush administration – a vibrant, independent and progressive media is needed now more than ever.
As Barack Obama replaced George W. Bush in the White House, corporate-owned TV, newspapers, radio, magazines and websites have bent over backwards to provide coverage to extreme right-wing groups, and their obstructionist agenda, rarely mentioning that many of these "grassroots" organizations are bankrolled by the industries that stand to lose billions of dollars in profits in these policy battles.
It's fascinating to witness the same media outlets that refused to provide serious coverage of the protest movement that effectively organized millions of Americans to oppose president Bush's war in Iraq, now allocate hundreds of hours of air time and column inches to the whackos railing against Obama's "death panels" and "the White House "socialist program," directly parroting the daily message of right-wing hate radio.
Yet, President Obama -- confronted by powerful interests that oppose even a slight change in the direction of U.S. policies here at home and abroad -- seems all too willing to surrender his well-articulated progressive principles that captured the imagination and support of so many voters during the 2008 campaign.
Independent media outlets such as Between The Lines are needed to maintain a focus on the critical issues and common sense solutions the corporate media refuse to cover -- and to hold spineless politicians accountable.
Your support helps spread viewpoints like these:
• Economics professor Richard D. Wolff on the global economic meltdown and the basic structural changes needed not only to fix today's broken economy, but to prevent future crises.
• "Agenda for a New Economy" author David Korten on how to build local, sustainable economies after we've seen how Wall Street priorities have created the global crises that's devastating Main Street
• BBC-TV's investigative reporter Greg Palast on the financial vultures who prey on the world's poor
• "The Green Collar Economy" author Van Jones -- ousted after a coordinated attack by right-wing extremists -- who advocated for a renewable energy economy that creates jobs and addresses climate change
• Physicians for National Health Program's Dr. Stephanie Woolhandler -- advocate for single-payer, universal health care where the well-being of society's citizens is the main priority, not maximizing profits.
Additionally, your contribution will enable Between The Lines to provide the program free of charge to more radio stations across the U.S. -- and purchase equipment and services vital to the production of the program each week.
