Our personal message:
We are walking to support and save farm animals! Last March, Paige, Pam and Anders visited the Multnomah Central Library and saw a movie called Peaceable Kingdom that NW Veg sponsored. The next day, we chose to change their lives and become vegan. Since then, we have been learning a lot about how much you can eat and use that do not have animal products in them. A whole world has opened up for us.

The Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary in Salem, Oregon inspired us to join the nationwide Walk for Farm Animals. When we took Anders there for a visit, we saw sweet animals and birds that were recovering from malnourishment, beatings, neglect and more.We have been learning about the abuse and neglect animals and birds experience in factory farms.

Farmed animals are excluded from state and federal anti-cruelty laws. As a result, calves, pigs and chickens are confined in crates or cages so small, they cannot even turn around. Animals who are too sick or injured to walk (called “downers”) are dragged to slaughter because they can still be sold for human food consumption. At the slaughterhouse, animals are frequently killed while fully conscious. Every year in the United States, millions of farmed animals suffer and die under conditions considered so cruel, they have been banned in other countries. (vegforlife.org)

The dairy industry chooses to project the myth that Holsteins have had the mothering instinct effectively bred out of them. This effort to minimize the annual tragedy of separating a mother cow from her calf perpetuates the lie that losing a child doesn't bother the mother in the least.

Phoebe the cow's mothering instinct is so strong that she once adopted a sheep. The sheep, David, was an older male sheep suffering from ailments caused by years of neglect. When he needed daily treatments and special feeds, he was placed in a paddock with Phoebe, who also needed to be in a stall for veterinary treatments. Instantaneously, Phoebe was concerned for the sheep. She groomed her new ward constantly and tried to protect him from the sanctuary workers who entered to provide treatments and care.

Sadly, David did not live long and Phoebe mourned his death. When a Farm Sanctuary intern found that David had died in his sleep overnight, she noted he was wet in places from Phoebe licking her lost friend to try to get him up. She bellowed when David's body was taken away and remained sullen for weeks after his passing, often returning to the place where David last slept. (vegforlife.org)

As we look around in the world and see so much devastion, we have found hope in our personal actions, our close families, friends and community. We believe that our individual actions will make a difference. Remember the quote by Margaret Mead:

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

What we can do:
Vote with your powerful consumer dollar and choose to not support factory farms. Buy from local and small farms. Eat more veggies, beans and grains. Simply start with one complete meal without animal products a week and have fun with it. Talk your friends into joining you for a vegan potluck. We will be hosting one in Portland soon!

Support the Farm Sanctuary http://www.farmsanctuary.org/ so they can provide education, advocacy and rescue service on behalf of all the farm animals that our fellow humans choose to abuse.
Help us raise thousands of dollars for the rescued animals at Farm Sanctuary while educating people about the cruelty of factory farming. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to our fundraising efforts.

Many thanks for your support-- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!

Sincerely,
The Black Sheep
Pam, Paige, and more team members to join soon!
