City of Grace partners with Somebody Cares Malawi, an African agency that works with orphans, vulnerable children, widows, the elderly and those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.  With a per capita income of $180 a year, and with almost 2,000,000 orphans and vulnerable children out of a population of 12.5 million, the people of Malawi struggle to simply survive.  Somebody Cares works among the poorest of the poor in 33 communities in Malawi.

In 2006/2007, City of Grace raised over $20,000 and in partnership with Somebody Cares, our teams distributed 3,000 blankets and 3,000 hand towels in the communities in and around the city of Lilongwe.   In these communities  most of the homes have dirt floors and no beds. People sleep on the floor or on a woven mat. In the dry season, the temperatures drop down into the 30s (Fahrenheit) and the villagers have no blankets to stay warm.

Our goal for 2007/2008 is to provide another 2,000+ blanket/towel combinations at $10 per set to be delivered to poorest of the poor in the communities served by Somebody Cares.  The blankets will be purchased in Malawi and distributed by outreach teams in May and June 2008. The blankets will provide comfort and warmth for villagers during the cold, winter nights. The towels will be used by children to get a shower in community centers that are being built in these communities.
