Reach Out and Read supports early literacy by training pediatricians to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud to their young children. Reach Out and Read follows a simple, dynamic model:

-In the exam room, doctors and nurses offer age-appropriate tips to parents about reading aloud to their children.

-At each well-child visit, children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years receive a new, developmentally and culturally appropriate book from their medical provider.

-In the waiting room, a literacy-rich environment (complete with donated books) encourages reading among children, parents, and volunteers.
