Hello,
I am writing to ask for your support on an effort to raise money for lung cancer awareness and research. Even though lung cancer causes one in every 3-cancer deaths, lung cancer research received less than 5% of National Cancer Institute budget in 2007. Lung cancer will kill more people than breast, prostate, colon, liver, kidney cancers and melanoma combined. That is an average of 439 people a day.
Some people think lung cancer is only a smoker’s disease but 15% affected have never smoked. The focus should not be on whether or not the affected were smokers. The focus should be on the research to fight this cancer, on life vs. death. No one “asks for it” or deserves this disease.
I am starting a walk and fundraising effort in support of my mother, Thomassina Graves. She is battling lung cancer, I can’t cure her disease but I can use my voice to raise awareness for the disease that touches so many lives. The walk I am organizing, with the help of friends and family (all personally touched by lung cancer themselves in some way) is going to be called “Breathe Ok.” All money raised will be donated to Lung Cancer Alliance, a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing patient support and advocacy for people living with or at risk for the disease.
The walk will be held September 12th, 2009 at Skyview Elementary School (trails behind school) in Yukon, Oklahoma. We are in need of donations, money, and sponsors to help make this walk a success. Please join me. With your voice, your support and your help, my mom and others can-just breathe.
Thank you,
Kari Newport
