Hi all, it's Sarah...
I wanted to let you know that Brian is running the Austin Half Marathon on February 17th in honor of Girlstart, the nonprofit where I work (www.girlstart.org). I didn't even have to talk him into it! I guess he knows how much I love this organization. I wish I could run too, but alas, I am a wimp. So sponsor Brian, and in turn, make an impact on the lives of girls in central Texas!
Girlstart gets girls more interested in math, science, engineering and technology (as you probably know, these are typically male-dominated fields) by presenting the subjects to them in a fun, girl-friendly environment. I have seen the way girls gain confidence through our programs. They lose that fear of being labeled a "smart girl" and really start dreaming about their future. Many of the girls in our programs come from a single-parent home, often with five or more people living off of less than $20,000 a year. An interest in math, science, engineering or technology can give girls the confidence they need to finish high school, the ticket they need to get to college, and a future career that will elevate their economic situation.
I encourage you all to consider supporting Girlstart by sponsoring the fast-as-lightning Brian Haegelin in his race to the finish line. You can donate safely on this site, and it doesn't have to be much - $10 will cover snacks for one girl for a week of camp! AND you should know that Brian has been training, and from what I have seen, he will probably win the race (easily beating out the 10,000+ other runners). Wouldn't it be cool to say that you sponsored the Austin Half Marathon winner? I think so.
Thanks so much!
Sarah
