Our personal message:

I’m running a marathon for charity and need your help!

I’m training for a marathon this fall and I’m running it for a specific reason: I lost my brother, Bryon, to leukemia in 1989.  I ran my first marathon in 2003 in his memory for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society and subsequently made a personal goal of running a marathon for charity each year.

The Special Olympics stood out as a very worthy recipient of our funds and time.  Our donations will help provide equipment, training, officiating, coaching, transportation, facilities, and awards for the approx 38,000 Special Olympics athletes in North Carolina. Please consider giving to support this great organization.

I was fortunate enough to be able to donate one of my two favorite kidneys in December 2006.  As a result of parting with ole’ Lefty, I was not able to run for an extended period in 2006 and 2007.  Unfortunately though, the time “off” required suspending my running/raising money goal for 2006.  However, I was recently given clearance to train for and run another marathon this fall.

I am already in the middle of my training for the City of Oaks Marathon (26.2 miles) in Raleigh, NC on November 4th.  Please note that if temperatures are unseasonably high then, I may be forced to only run the half-marathon.  Apparently overheating and/or overexerting isn’t such a good idea with only one kidney.

I sincerely appreciate any contributions you are able to make; I plan on making both you and Bryon proud.

Thank you,
Matthew
