October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month

Each year, in celebration of National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, communities all across the country participate in Buddy Walks® to raise awareness of this common genetic condition. On October 8, 2011 the Columbus Area Down Syndrome Support Group, in conjunction with the National Down Syndrome Society, will be hosting their 11th annual Buddy Walk®.

The Buddy Walk® was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. The Buddy Walk® has grown from 17 walks in 1995 to nearly 300 walks in 2010. In 2010 over $11.2 million was raised nationwide to benefit local programs and services, as well as the national advocacy and public awareness initiatives of NDSS that benefit all individuals with Down syndrome.

The proceeds from the Buddy Walk® are used to provide services and support to families in South Central Indiana. A portion of the funds are forwarded to the National Down Syndrome Society to support their education and advocacy efforts.

Thank you for your support of Buddy Walk® 2011.Your genorosity will help the Columbus Area Down Syndrome Support Group and The Arc of Bartholomew County continue to provide meaningful programming and services in our community.
