Another successful ride has come to a conclusion and thanks again go out to all who supported our efforts, especially James.
This year brought us a few new rookies as Drew and Jay F. joined Ride Boss Jeff, Jay S. , Bracy, Stephen, Charles and the timely return of Alex to 19th rendition of the ride to the coast.
A hot and beautiful spring day greeted us on day 1 as we once again got on our bikes and headed for Charleston, to benefit the Special Olympics.
The rolling hills of east-central Georgia and the high heat of a late departure stung mightily at the thighs as a humbling reminder of how little a spin class can prepare one for this ride.
Despite a flat tire and a closed road, we all made the rendevous at the Brick in Milledgeville.
A late lunch departure, for some, robbed them of the mighty sprint into infamous Deep Step, GA and the equally easy cruise into the days finish in Sandersville, GA and the lovely Villa South.
Day 2 provided the most drama along with some of the most pristine roads. The pristine roads came from a new route through Waynesboro and a wonderful lunch break at Mobleys.
The drama came from a broken cable, a bold attempt to get to a bike shop in Augusta, a wheel that was taco'd by the support van and the valiant effort of our intrepid duo of Stephen and Drew to time trial thru the plutonium-enriched Savannah River plant, all in an effort to make it to Allandale, SC in time for the Tandoori feast. A few beers and a massive amount of fried, brown something-or-other and all was ok.
As a footnote, Cooterfest has been moved to the first week in May, depriving our crew of a chance to partake of the finer culinary skills of our SC breathern.
The final day brought about the usual anxiety and high drama of impending rain and the desire to high-tail it out of of curry-drenched accomodations. The low-country roads and a cool morning gave way to a frantic search for breakfast food and the discovery of just how good sausage and white-bread can taste when proceeded by 25 miles on a bike.
The benfits of the support van, and the generosity of James, were greatly appreciated as we made our way closer to Charleston and the roads narrowed and the cars got more aggressive. Without that help, Rita and her ALTA-playing, cougar friends, would have surely ridden right over the top of Jay F.
Despite the tension, all made it safely to Charleston, and beat the rain as our procession streamed onto the Battery for a triumphant celebration, as we once again cheated death.
Many thanks for your support and encourgement along the way. You have helped a truly great cause and for that we are most appreciative.
