Walk A Mile in Their Shoes

What : A one-mile fundraising event to help Catholic Charities fight poverty in Steuben County.

Opening Remarks:    9:45am -10:00am

The Goals of  Walk A Mile In Their Shoes are to increase awareness about Poverty in Steuben County and to fundraise for Catholic Charities Anti-Poverty Programs to help support the work to provide Help that Works… Hope that Lasts to our neighbors who are experiencing financial hardship.

Walk a Mile in the Shoes of:

A Child: Children are the most vulnerable and make-up the largest segment of the population living in poverty. 1 in 5 children in Steuben County live in poverty.
Walk a mile in their shoes…

A Single Mom: Half of families living in poverty in Steuben County are headed by a single female with children under 5. The rate of poverty is 5 times the rate for married couples despite the fact that over 60% are working.
Walk a mile in their shoes…

A Family earning a low income: A family of four earning $20,614 a year is more than $2,000 over budget after meeting basic expenses for food, housing, utilities, healthcare, and child care. There are no additional resources to buy any other necessities: clothes, household items, school supplies, etc.

A Senior Citizen:
Too many seniors living on fixed incomes are forced to make tough choices about their food, housing, heating, and healthcare.

The Unemployed: Those who have lost jobs or had their hours cut are facing hardship perhaps for the first time in their lives. Steuben ranks 51 out of 62 counties in NYS in unemployment. 7,500 local workers are currently unemployed, underemployed or are no longer eligible for benefits.
