Child Poverty in Steuben County

Children are the most vulnerable and make-up the largest segment of the population living in poverty. 1 in 5 children live in poverty in Steuben County.

Single Parents 50% of families living in poverty in Steuben County are headed by a single parent. This is 5x's the rate of poverty for married couples despite the fact that over 60% are working.

Nearly 50% of our Students are eligible for free or reduced lunches at school. This is a significant indicator of family income and poverty.

The Average Cost of Childcare
for a 4-yr-old is $620 a month.  A single parent working 40 hours per week at minimum wage(7.25 per hour) would spend 50% of her gross income on childcare.  The lack of affordable childcare and lack of jobs that pay a living wage are major causes of poverty in outr community.

Catholic Charities of Steuben County embraces the challenge and the responsibility of serving all people who come to us in need and to treat every individual non-judgmentally with respect, care, and compassion and with your help...

It's amazing what we can do together
