Habitat uses volunteer labor and donations of money and materials to provide affordable homeownership to those people who would not otherwise have that opportunity. We create systemic social change by giving the economically disenfranchised the tools necessary to break the cycle of poverty.
After Habitat builds each house, it sells the home to a qualified low-income family. The houses are affordable because the Habitat program provides an interest-free mortgage and a below market-value sale price. The families who are accepted earn only 40%-70% of the median income for the area. Future homeowners are also required to invest 350 hours of labor, or “sweat equity”, into building their house and the houses of others.
Established in 1988, CDHfH is an affiliate to Habitat for Humanity International serving Albany County and Saratoga County, NY. To date, CDHfH has built 50 homes.
