The Red Cross is a symbol of hope throughout the world. As part of this humanitarian organization, the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago provides disaster relief to victims of single-family emergencies and community, national and international disasters; and helps 8.3 million people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies within our seven county jurisdictions of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties. In addition to health and safety education (over 400,000 area residents trained in 2005), disaster relief (average of 2 families serviced, free of charge, each day), and blood services (we collect and distribute half the nation's blood supply), the Red Cross links families and military members torn apart by war or famine through our international tracing (over 120 cases in 2005) and Armed Forces Emergency Services programs (over 1,600 cases opened last year).
