Nothing is more heartbreaking than watching a child grieve for someone significant in their life who has died. Often children with unresolved grief feel confused, anxious, sad and angry at their loss and don't know where to turn for help.
The mission of The Cove Center for Grieving Children is to provide hope and healing to these suffering children and to offer nurturing, safe and supportive environments where they can heal.
For the last 10 years, The Cove has made a difference in the lives of over 1,000 families through peer support groups for children ages 4-18. Our primary goals for 2010 include:
- Maintaining our successful family programs in West Hartford, Guilford, Madison and New Haven which currently support over 100 children and 60 families.
- Launching a new family program in Stonington, targeted for January 2010 to offer services to 8 families and 16 children.
- Providing our "Good Grief" School program to at least 20 schools around the state this year. This program offers students the opportunity to share about loss in the school environment with their peers and will support over 200 students. We also offer support and outreach when unexpected deaths occur within the school community.
- Offering professional development opportunities and educational outreach programs to communities across Connecticut.
The Cove truly changes lives. Read about the impact of our programs below:
- "My mom died suddenly 2 years ago. The time spent at The Cove has truly brought my family closer together. The Cove has given me a place where I feel safe. The people at The Cove are people I know I can trust. The Cove was the only place I felt like I belonged." (Roni, age 13)
- "My father died 6 years ago. It was really hard and I felt really sad. When someone you love dies, it's like having a chunk taken out of your heart. My mom took my brother and me to The Cove and I finally saw there were other kids who had lost someone they loved too. I got my feelings out and I talked. The Cove was sort of like a family." (Katie, age 11)
- "The best part of the group was having people who experienced the same losses. The fact that people could talk to me and I could do the same was great." (Harrison, age 13)
- "I would not know how to cope with my loss sometimes if The Cove wasn't there to listen." (Amy, age 14)
- "I can never repay The Cove program for all you have done to help my boys and me through the most tragic time of our lives. When we lost my wife, The Cove was a godsend." (Ken, Cove parent)
Is there somebody you would like to raise money In Memory Of or In Honor Of? If so, we need your help!
Please help us raise the funding we need this year so we can stay on target to reach over 400 grieving children across Connecticut. By taking just a few minutes now, sharing your personal story and then sending an email to your friends, family and colleagues you could change the course of a child's life.
We need 60 people who will commit to raising $1,000. To raise $1,000 all you need is to have 50 people donate $20, it's that easy! Won't you help us help more children? Just click on the "Get Started" button at the top of this page.
Thank you for your caring, generosity and support.
