Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a genetic condition that causes tumors in major body organs including the brain, kidneys, eyes, lungs, heart and skin. TSC can cause a multitude of medical, developmental, and behavioral challenges in those who are affected by it. Some are affected severely by the disease and others are affected so mildly, it can go undetected. Like Graham, many TSC patients have no family history of TSC, so it can strike any family, at any time. The worst part of having TSC is thatthere is no cure… YET.  In the U.S., at least 2 babies are born with TSC each day. This means that TSC affects about 50,000 people in the U.S. and 1 million worldwide.  TSC is a leading known genetic cause of epilepsy and autism.

Our son, Graham has TSC. Even though he is mildly affected by the disease, Graham has tumors in his brain, heart, kidneys and skin due to TSC. Graham has epilepsy that is controlled with medication. He has challenges with fine motor skills, gross motor skills and attention.

We are closer to a cure for TSC than we have ever thought we would be in 2009.  The progress that has been made in the scientific community in the past few years has been phenomenal.  Now, we can honestly say that we believe that Graham will benefit from the treatments that will be developed based on the current research findings.  It's not about just helping the future generations anymore!  In addition, as researchers learn more about this disease, they are finding out how solving the mystery of TSC would open doors to meaningful treatments for other conditions such as epilepsy, autism, cancer and diabetes that afflict millions of Americans.
