CYCLE Kids was thrilled to be selected as an official charity for the 114th Boston Marathon®! We are excited to have a team of 15 dedicated individuals who are joining us in our mission to educate inner city children about the importance of living physically active, healthy lifestyles. Your help in supporting their fundraising efforts will play a critical roll in helping CYCLE Kids combat the rise in childhood diabetes and obesity.
Did you know
- Due to poor nutritional habits and insufficient physical excercise, the life expectancy of children today is less than ours
- More than 85% of children do not get enough exercise
- One in three American children are overweight
- One quarter of all children under the age of 12 are at risk of developing diabetes
Our program
CYCLE Kids provides schools with a physical education curriculum that is a cost-effective, healthy lifestyle, bicycle-skills and safety program for children ages 8-12. Schools receive brand new bikes and helmets and a workbook-based curriculum. We are collaboratoring with educators at Boston University to do pre- and post-testing of students to understand short-term program impact, both in physical exercise and healthy food choices. Our results will be used to develop a new curriculum for schools that will combine health lessons and physical education.
Since its founding in 2004, CYCLE Kids has reached more than 2500 children in metro Boston and New York City; 24% of these children learned how to ride bikes for the first time.
About us
Moved by her concern about the prevalence of type II diabetes and heart disease in children, Julianne Idlet founded CYCLE Kids in 2004 to combat childhood obesity. Following her love and passion for bicycling, she developed the CYCLE Kids program, which provides the only after-school or physical education curriculum that introduces children to the joys of biking, healthy eating, fitness, and environmental awareness in settings that reach a large population.
Your support will help
Your support of CYCLE Kids will help schools and community organizations teach children habits that encourage physical, mental, and emotional well being, brings communities and institutions together to nurture our children, and helps combat childhood obesity. Most importantly, you will give children a gift of knowledge they will have for the rest of their lives.
