What is Lupus? Lupus is a serious, chronic autoimmune disease. Autoimmune means that the immune system loses its normal ability to recognize the difference between foreign substances it should protect against (viruses, bacteria, etc.) and the body's own cells and, consequently, attacks itself. This also makes the body more susceptible to blood clots, secondary infections like pneumonia, and organ damage. Lupus affects the entire body and causes symptoms such as chronic fatigue, pain, and inflammation. "Flares" are usually triggered by infections, antibiotics, ultraviolet light , stress, and certain drugs. Oftentimes, people with Lupus end up with associated conditions such as arthritis, Sjogren's, and Raynaud's, to name a few. (I'm one of those people.)
Lupus affects more people than AIDS, sickle cell anemia, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and cystic fibrosis combined. Its cause is unknown.
