Hi Friends and Family,
As you may know, last summer I had the awesome opportunity to spend a portion of my summer in N’dola, Zambia partnering with a local school, orphanage, and church to educate, organize medical clinics, assist with a child sponsorship program and work on developing AIDS awareness.
The situation after Zambia’s independence in 1964 rapidly devolved economically as it has struggled to transition from colonialism, debt and disease. About 80% of the Zambian people live on less than one dollar a day. At least one out of every five Zambians is infected with HIV/AIDS which means that it has hit almost every family—infected or affected. This has left Zambia with approximately 1,500,000 orphans under the age of 18 years.
This coming October I will be running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon (all 26.2 miles!) to raise money for World Vision. World Vision works to tackle the root causes of poverty by working with children, families, and their communities to provide things like clean water, health care, nutritious food, education, and economic opportunities. This year, we are raising money to bring clean water to communities in Zambia and Kenya!
I appreciate support in all forms - cheers! prayers! good vibes! etc. If you are able, you can support the work of Team World Vision im Africa by donating monetarily. All donations can be made on-line through this website and are tax deductible. My goal is to raise at least $500 (and hopefully much more) before the race on October 11th, 2009.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for October 11th!! If you happen to be at the marathon, keep an eye out for me - I will be in the bright orange World Vision gear.
Sincerely,
Eleanor
