My personal message:

Emma and I are thrilled beyond belief to be the first to raise money for the
American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation via Firstgiving

We asked the Foundation to sign up with Firstgiving and they they said,
"YES, OF COURSE"!

The AKC Canine Health Foundation awards grants to different facets of canine health research.

Clubs and individuals need to sponsor at least half of the cost of the grant.  The Foundation funds the remaining half of the grant.  I am checking to see what amount has been sponsored so far.  I know that the Basset Hound Club of America has donated 20,000 dollars to Grant No. 747.  That means that the CHF will match that.

The CHF cannot match beyond the full grant amount.  So you can trust me to keep track of this information.  Keep checking back, because I am going to add a spread sheet to account for this information on this page.

Emma is raising money for primary glaucoma.  Here is the grant information.

Grant No. 747: The Mapping and Characterization of Mutations Responsible for Canine Glaucoma - BASSET HOUND BREED SPECIFIC.

Principal Investigator(s): Elizabeth Giuliano, DVM, MS, DACVO, University of Missouri, Columbia
Sponsor(s): No Sponsors
Grant Amount: $82,080.00 (half paid by AKC/CHF)
Start Date: 10/1/2007 Duration (in yrs): 2

This just in from Elizabeth Giuliano, DVM, MS, DACVO, University of Missouri, Columbia:

START OF COMMENT

"At the moment, we are in the early stages of genetic discovery… and there is a great deal of work yet to be done.  Glaucoma is indeed a rather depressing disease for veterinary ophthalmologists world-wide and we strive to learn more about it to try and to help dogs.  Unfortunately, there are very few ACVO diplomates (less than 400 world wide) and much fewer of us in academia (only about 50) who are actively involved in research."

END OF COMMENT

Emma and I are very proud to help experts in the early stages of genetic discovery.  So much so, that if you donate 20.00 or more to Emma's fundraiser I will send you a 10 pack of Bassethoundtown greeting cards.  Here is a link to the cards so you can take a look at them.

FREE 10 PACK OF BASSETHOUNDTOWN GREETING CARDS FOR A DONATION OF 20.00 OR MORE!  ONE PACK PER DONATION!

Please check back often because there will be many updates about Emma and about how the research is going.  I hope to do interviews with the veterinarians who are actually doing the research.

If you have a blind hound from glaucoma I am sure you have heard from others about how well they do, and they do.  However, we want to go a step further and make sure that hearing that statement is a thing of the past!  Hounds may do very well blind but they do a lot better sighted.  That I can promise you.

We are so excited about this new chapter of Emma's life.  So much as been taken away and she still wants to give back.

She was born for this!  Our goal is to make sure no other hound is!

Thank you for visiting her fundraising page!

Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support Emma's fundraising efforts.

Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!  Let's make blind hounds a thing of the past!

Love Emma Rudert
