Description: Our community self-help approach ensures that project members decide on their own priorities and solutions ensuring ownership and sustainability. In semi-arid rural areas water is always the first priority, followed by food and ability to earn school fees for their children.

In Kenya, where our approach was developed, half the population – that’s 16M people – lack access to clean water. After the twice yearly rains, water sources quickly dry up, forcing people to walk up to 10 miles for often unclean water. On average one in three rainy seasons fails and the problems are further exacerbated by deforestation. Lack of trees causes soil erosion and reduced rainwater retention, thereby reducing food production.

The Benefits : The holistic approach to development creates inter-dependent benefits. In particular our three-pronged approach to soil and water conservation by terracing, building sand dams and tree planting enables communities to transform both environments and their own lives.
