When severe storms hit Northern Illinois over the Memorial Day weekend, the Eagle nest on the Mooseheart property near Batavia was destroyed when it fell 85' from the tree. After receiving a late night call from Kane County Audubon, Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation went to the Mooseheart property, recovered the eaglets from the ground and took them back to their facility for temporary care.

 

The following morning with the help of The Care of Trees and Mooseheart staff Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation constructed a new nest and returned the eaglets to the nest. The parents returned and we were hopeful that the parents would resume care of the eaglets in the new nest. Unfortunately, the parents still had not fed the eaglets after two days and - again with the help of The Care of Trees - Flint Creek Wildlife removed the eaglets from the nest to ensure the eaglets' survival.

 

Although the eaglets' condition had deteriorated signficantly over the two days of not being fed, they are now doing well in the care of Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation.

 

Bald Eagles are just making a comeback in the Chicago area and Bald Eagle nests in the Chicago area are few. These are the first eaglets to have fallen from a nest here and, therefore, are also the first eaglets to need care in the Chicago area.

 

Some people have asked us why we don't just transfer these eagles out of state for care at a facility that already has a flight chamber and save us the expense of expanding ours. Well, eagles are now in Chicago to stay and no one in the Chicago area currently has a 100' flight chamber. It makes sense for us to develop the facilties and the expertise so that Eagles have a Chicago-based rehabilitation center.

 

Flint Creek Wildlife now needs your help.  Once the eaglets are ready to leave the nest, we will need to move them into a 100' flight chamber so that they can learn to fly and condition prior to release. This will require expansion of our existing flight chamber and this expansion is an unplanned expense and one for which we must raise money to cover the costs.  Please help us raise much needed funds to care for the eaglets.  Any support you are able to provide is greatly appreciated.
