There is one thing I HATE and that is cold. Freezing cold winter, water, wind or even Frosty the Snowman is not my friend. If you know me then you have probably heard how I will refuse to get in the pool with my kids unless it is at least 86 degrees. No ifs ands or butts about it. You have to be believably drowning before this ex lifeguard will enter the pool. No exceptions. There is nothing more painful to me than cold water.
When I fly on an airplane I will have the occasional thought “God forbid but what if something tore the plane in two”? FACT. My thought is always the same. How cold it would be falling for minutes not the split second hitting part.
Lastly, I have been in ice cold water once before. I went water skiing. Ok, actually attempted skiing. It had snowed 2 weeks before but the water had thawed. After several attempts and almost loosing my shorts from doing cartwheels on top of the water I was done. What part of the male anatomy do you think was the most cold? It was not what I had thought. The bottoms of my feet hurt so bad! It was like repeatedly getting hit with a hammer. I HATE COLD! Have I made my point?
So, why I am I doing this? I have volunteered and donated for other things. But in the past I have only given resources, my time, money or skill. This is different to me anyway and contributes more than sacraficing a blink of momentary pain. I take this personal for other reasons besides the cold thing.
I admire and I am impressed with their commitment. I admire their hard work. I admire their effort to reach farther, challenge themselves, grow, and self improve. Some people limit themselves. They don't. There is always room for improvement and growth in all areas of our lives.
The Special Olympics and the athletes involved embrace this. These are real people training hard to improve them selves just like you and I. If they can train hard and I can jump in freezing cold water you can give at least $1. I am asking you to give. Please give if even only one dollar. Thank you. ( : Dave Youhas
