ASO + Save the Children's East Africa Food Crisis
The African Students Organization is partnering with Save the Children to raise funds for the famine in East Africa.
A deadly combination of failed rains and rising food prices has left over 10 million people facing a devastating food crisis. Families have lost their incomes and food supplies. Millions of children are hungry, thirsty and desperate. They are in danger of becoming critically malnourished and, without help, many in the worst hit areas could die.
Save the Children has worked in East Africa for decades and was able to respond very quickly to the unfolding crisis. As they race to address the scale of the humanitarian needs in the region, the following are examples of Save the Children’s response so far.
- Treating malnourished children. The life-saving treatment is usually quick and simple - so far this year, they have treated over 8,000 malnourished children in their feeding centres in Somalia.
- From Jan-May 2011, 87% of the 4,950 acutely malnourished children admitted through Save the Children’s emergency nutrition program in Somalia were discharged fully recovered.
- Distributing life-saving water and improving water supply and sanitation facilities in health clinics and schools. For example, they've distributed over 24 million liters of water in South Central Somalia, reaching over 70,000 people.
- Providing jerry cans, water filters and water purification tablets to ensure that water is safe to drink.
- Helping families afford nutritious food by distributing food vouchers, whilst supporting the local market to function and providing cash transfers to enable them to buy essential items for their children.
With your help they can stop this crisis becoming far worse.
