Sofia Zervos is a beautiful 23 year old woman who can do nothing for herself.  At l4 months she lost all of her abilities except that of walking by herself.  At 2 years of age, she was finally diagnosed with RETT SYNDROME, a rare genetic occurrence only in females.  Her intelligent mind is locked up, but she speaks with her eyes and gestures.  She came to Centaur Stride at the age of sweet l6, at this point only able to walk with assistance.  She was placed upon a large white horse names Cocoa, and fell in love with horseback riding.  First needing 4 attendees, she could only lay backwards on the horse.  After just a few weeks of physical therapy with Claudia Monroe, who runs this amazing, blessed place, she was able to sit straight upon the horse--still does--for a half hour to 45 minutes and needs only the horse leader and ONE assistant to guard her.  Her face lights up with anticipation every time we take her, usually weekly, to Centaur Stride.  Now, Sofia, who cannot dress, bathe, feed or speak by herself CAN and DOES ride horses.  I can't do that and neither can her father or siblings!!! Please give generously to this wonderful facility. I’m told there are over 150 people who benefit from these programs here. I am happy to witness many of the riders’ improvements and talk to many of the parents while I am there for Sofia’s lesson. Sofia is followed by doctors studying Rett’s Syndrome. She is one of the oldest, highest functioning girls with Rett’s Syndrome. I’m certain that horseback riding plays an important part in that.
