The team:
Jenny Worley is already a fabulously fit cyclist who rides to work and around town, but she's never done a century before, and has wanted to for years. She is doing this fundraiser because wants to help make sure the Lyon Martin center can continue providing primary care to San Franciscans who cannot afford insurance.
Lukas Blakk has been cycling, as exercise instead of just for commuting, since 2008 when she came out to California for an internship with Mozilla and fell in love with the dry heat, the wide roads, the plentiful bike lanes, and the CalTrain bike car. It's so much easier to be a cyclist here than in Toronto and as the years have progressed she has gotten more brave about venturing further afield in the Bay Area. In the summer of 2011 Lukas rode with Jenny and Lukas' moms, Rose and Sally, from Prague to Budapest for a ride of about 650 km total over 6 days of riding. One day was almost a metric century (93 km) and since then she has wanted to do a full century just for kicks. Doing one and to raising money for a good cause at the same time seems like a no-brainer.
Joey Cupcake just finished her first triathlon in June and wants to keep training up to doing an Olympic length tri so in between she's going to do a metric century.
J. Jayes has been riding bikes for 9 years. Jayes started off the love affair in the mountains of New Mexico on a mountain bike but soon after turned his attention to road biking. Since beginning biking Jayes had rode in the Albuquerque Century, the Santa Fe Century, and the Tour d' Tucson. After being off his bike for a couple years Jayes is humbled and honored to be riding again. He feels biking has saved his life and keeps him grateful.
The goal:
We have been training throughout July, riding 40-50 miles per week and in the first part of August we're going to bump that up to at least 100 miles per week so we can do our century ride at the Tour D'Organics in Sebastopol on August 12th.
We're using tracking apps if you want to see our rides and cheer on our progress:
Lukas on Strava
Jenny on MapMyRun
Joey tracked our most recent ride
We will keep sharing our rides and adventures until the big day and then there will be plenty of photos and a blog post after the ride. This is the first time either of us will have ridden this far.
Thank you very much for supporting us as we work on our health as well as the health of the Lyon Martin clinic which is a much-needed resource for women and the LGBTTQ people of San Francisco.
